Adapt language while keeping the learning goal

Keep the same learning goal while changing reading demands.

Use this lesson with the “Differentiate a reading without losing meaning” skill builder. Allow about 40 minutes for reading and practice; provider training is additional.

1. Learn the principle

Separate the intended concept from the reading demands. Shorter sentences and vocabulary supports should help access the same reasoning, rather than silently remove it.

2. Study a worked example

A photosynthesis adaptation omits carbon dioxide. It is easier to read but no longer explains the process accurately. Restore the idea using a short sentence and labeled vocabulary.

3. Practice with your own example

List three essential ideas before adapting a paragraph. Compare both versions against that list. Ask the same reasoning question of both versions.

Produce: Two reviewed reading versions and a common exit ticket.

Review your work: Both versions retain key facts and require the same core reasoning.

4. Check your understanding

What if the simpler version cannot support the shared question?

Reveal the explanation after you answer

Restore the missing concept or scaffold it explicitly, then recheck the reading and question together.

5. Extend the skill

Ask a colleague to identify whether the two versions demand the same core reasoning.
