Give feedback that leaves revision to the learner

Use AI drafts to improve feedback while retaining teacher judgment.

Use this lesson with the “Give feedback that supports revision” skill builder. Allow about 35 minutes for reading and practice; provider training is additional.

1. Learn the principle

Connect feedback to visible evidence in the work and one rubric criterion. Suggest a next action without replacing the learner’s reasoning or making unsupported judgments about ability.

2. Study a worked example

Instead of “Here is your rewritten paragraph,” use “Your claim is clear, but sentence two gives no evidence. Add one observation and explain how it supports your claim.”

3. Practice with your own example

Write a fictional paragraph and a two-criterion rubric. Draft feedback, underline the evidence it refers to, and remove any statement not supported by the paragraph.

Produce: A feedback model and student revision checklist.

Review your work: Feedback points to specific text and helps revision without rewriting the work for the learner.

4. Check your understanding

How can feedback be helpful without supplying the final text?

Reveal the explanation after you answer

Name the gap, point to its location, and ask for a specific revision the learner can make.

5. Extend the skill

Compare a first and revised sample to see whether the feedback addresses the intended criterion.
