Audit questions and answer keys

Build questions that reveal misconceptions rather than recall alone.

Use this lesson with the “Design a better formative assessment” skill builder. Allow about 40 minutes for reading and practice; provider training is additional.

1. Learn the principle

Work backward from the learning objective. Each question should reveal something interpretable about learner thinking. Independently solve generated questions and examine all answer options.

2. Study a worked example

A question asks for an example of a mammal and lists both a whale and a bat as separate single-answer choices. Both are correct; revise the stem or choices before use.

3. Practice with your own example

Draft three items. For each, record the objective, correct answer, reasoning, misconception behind each distractor, and what you will reteach if it is missed.

Produce: A five-question check, verified key, and reteaching decision guide.

Review your work: Each item measures the objective and every distractor has an interpretable purpose.

4. Check your understanding

What does a wrong answer to an ambiguous question tell you?

Reveal the explanation after you answer

It may tell you nothing reliable about understanding. Fix the item before drawing conclusions.

5. Extend the skill

Have a colleague solve your items without seeing the key and compare interpretations.
