Investigate patterns, representation, and omissions

Make data, patterns, and limitations visible in a classroom lesson.

Use this lesson with the “Teach how AI learns from examples” skill builder. Allow about 45 minutes for reading and practice; provider training is additional.

1. Learn the principle

Help learners distinguish a pattern produced by a model from a fair or complete account of the world. Ask whose examples may be missing and how to examine the output.

2. Study a worked example

An AI career story repeatedly assigns technical roles to one demographic group. Discuss the pattern, look for missing perspectives, and rewrite with varied examples rather than treating the output as a fact.

3. Practice with your own example

Prepare three fictional model outputs. Identify a repeated assumption, gather counterexamples, and write an exit question about limitations and representation.

Produce: A short AI literacy lesson and reflection prompt.

Review your work: Learners can explain why examples affect predictions and identify one limitation.

4. Check your understanding

Should a model’s repeated pattern be taught as evidence about a group?

Reveal the explanation after you answer

No. Investigate the assumptions and evidence, and discuss why generated patterns can misrepresent people.

5. Extend the skill

Connect the activity to a grade-appropriate lesson about training examples and model predictions.
