Build a claim-to-evidence record
Teach evidence checking using a teacher-prepared AI response.
Use this lesson with the “Verify AI claims and sources” skill builder. Allow about 35 minutes for reading and practice; provider training is additional.
1. Learn the principle
Break an answer into checkable claims. Open each original source and check that it actually supports the wording, date, and context. Multiple AI answers agreeing does not create independent evidence.
2. Study a worked example
A generated citation names a real report but attributes a statistic the report never gives. The citation exists; the claim still fails verification.
3. Practice with your own example
Make four columns: claim, original source, supporting passage, decision. Verify three claims and rewrite or remove any unsupported statement.
Produce: A claim-evidence worksheet with a teacher answer key.
Review your work: Every retained claim has a source that actually supports it; invented references are removed.
4. Check your understanding
Is finding a real source enough to validate a citation?
Reveal the explanation after you answer
No. The source must support the specific claim in its context. Record what it does and does not establish.
5. Extend the skill
Check a numerical claim, including the population, timeframe, and denominator.
